GST/HST (Canada)
Canada's sales tax: 5% federal GST, or a combined 13–15% HST in five provinces.
What it is
GST is Canada's 5% federal sales tax. Ontario and the four Atlantic provinces fold it into a single Harmonized Sales Tax of 13–15%. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec keep GST and add a separately registered provincial tax on top. The rate follows the province the order ships to, not where the store is.
Why it costs you money
One store can owe five different rates on the same order depending on the delivery address. A WooCommerce tax table with a single Canada row overcharges some provinces and undercharges others, and the undercharge is still owed.
How to check it yourself
Your tax table needs one rate row per province and territory, thirteen in all. Place test orders to an Ontario, a Quebec and a British Columbia address and check each total against the CRA's published rates.
