WoodMart vs Astra: a ready-made WooCommerce theme against a base you assemble

WoodMart if the store wants wishlists, tiered pricing and quick view from one $69 purchase. Astra if someone will design it in the block editor. The weakest setup measured here, by a wide margin, is Astra carrying an Elementor starter template imported as it ships, with a full tag stack on top.

WoodMart vs Astra is not two themes of the same kind. WoodMart arrives as a store: header builder, product page layouts and a long list of shop features inside the theme. Astra arrives as a frame of about 35 KB and expects a builder, a starter template and plugins to fill it. We measured both vendors' demo stores with Lighthouse 12.6.1 on mobile, three runs per template, on October 18, 2026, and split every script by the folder it came from. Astra also has something WoodMart lacks: Chrome UX Report field data from 168,423 real sites.

01

The 853 KB demo against the 382 KB one, split by who wrote the code

Astra's own JavaScript on its Brandstore demo is 8 KB. WoodMart's is 103 KB. On the theme layer alone Astra is about thirteen times lighter, and that is the only layer where it wins. Everything else on the Astra demo was added on top: Elementor, the vendor's companion shop plugins, Google Fonts and a heavy tag stack. WoodMart's theme does more of the work itself, and ships 75 script files and 106 stylesheets to a product page against Astra's 56 and 40. Most of the Astra demo's weight can be deleted, because almost none of it is Astra. WoodMart's 103 KB comes with the purchase; the WoodMart speed optimization guide covers how much of it the theme's settings switch off. The demo leaves Astra's local-fonts setting off and pulls 432 KB of fonts in 19 files into a product page; WoodMart's needs 74 KB in 5.

  • Analytics and marketing tags: Astra demo 572 KB, WoodMart demo 178 KB
  • WordPress core scripts: 114 KB against 39 KB
  • Page builder: 94 KB of Elementor against under 1 KB of WPBakery script
  • Other plugins: 41 KB against 13 KB; WooCommerce itself: 22 KB against 23 KB

Astra's demo had the faster server and still lost by 29 points

Hosting does not explain this gap, and it runs the wrong way for that. The Astra demo's HTML came from Cloudflare's cache in a median 50 ms; WoodMart's was generated uncached in 219 ms. Astra's demo still scored 38 to WoodMart's 67, with 891 ms of Total Blocking Time against 552 ms and a median LCP of 13.7 seconds against 4.6. In this dataset a gap under about 10 points is run-to-run noise, so 29 points is a real difference between two websites. On Astra's product page the LCP element is the main product photo, marked loading="lazy", which waited 6.3 seconds before the browser even requested it.

03

Ten store features WoodMart ships, and where Astra sends you for each

WoodMart's ThemeForest listing names multiple wishlists, product compare, frequently bought together, dynamic discounts with tiered pricing, abandoned cart recovery, quick view, AJAX shop filters, color and image swatches, size guides and a sticky add-to-cart bar, all inside the theme. Astra splits the same ground three ways. Quick view, slide-out filters, the pinned add-to-cart bar and the two-step checkout sit with Astra Pro on Astra's WooCommerce page. Swatches, abandoned cart emails, a slide-in cart and dynamic discounts come as separate free plugins from the same company; the Astra demo runs three of them, Power Coupons, Modern Cart and Variation Swatches, for 9 requests on its product page. Wishlists? Not on the list. Nor are compare, frequently bought together or size guides, so those come from third parties on their own update cycles. A gift or wholesale catalog that needs wishlists, bundles and tiered pricing is where Astra is the worse buy, with four vendors to keep compatible where WoodMart has one. A store that wants swatches and a cleaner checkout and nothing else gets them from Astra without carrying the rest.

04

Astra sites fail on paint, not on taps: 44.3% good LCP, 89.3% good INP

Real Chrome visitors put Astra sites at a 40.0% mobile pass rate on all three Core Web Vitals in September 2026, across 168,423 origins, and 45.4% on desktop. INP and CLS are fine at 89.3% and 90.8%. LCP is where Astra sites lose, and only 16.1% of them have a good mobile TTFB, which points at servers long before it points at a 35 KB theme. The population is every WordPress site HTTP Archive detects running Astra, blogs included, and the report cannot separate bare Astra from Astra with Elementor. WoodMart has no row in the report, so a WoodMart pass rate quoted anywhere was not taken from this source. Astra speed optimization sets the order for finding which layer owns a slow LCP.

05

Three-year license cost: $69, $207 or $797

WoodMart is $69 once on ThemeForest, with future updates and 6 months of support, extendable to 12 months for $21.38. Astra is free on WordPress.org with over a million active installs. Astra Pro alone is $69 a year, $207 over three years, or $249 lifetime at the current offer. Premium Starter Templates come only with the Essential Toolkit at $199 for the first year and $299 a year after that, which puts three years at $797. Those are introductory rates as listed on October 18, 2026, and Astra's pricing page says renewals run at full price. The cheapest store of the four routes is free Astra in the block editor; the dearest is a premium starter template you keep renewing for one design you imported once.

06

Leaving later: WPBakery shortcodes, Elementor JSON, or plain blocks

Exit cost follows the builder, not the theme. Ranked from cheapest to dearest to move off WordPress: Astra with block-editor pages, then WoodMart on the block editor, whose custom blocks still need the theme to render, then Elementor on either theme, with layouts stored as a JSON tree in _elementor_data, and last WoodMart on its bundled WPBakery, where every page is nested [vc_row] shortcodes. WoodMart's own demo is built on WPBakery. WoodMart to Next.js and Astra to Next.js price both extractions.

07

Switching between the two will not fix a red Core Web Vitals report

A store on Astra and Elementor that fails LCP gains little by moving to WoodMart. Every page gets rebuilt, and the causes the field data points to, heavy layouts and slow servers, come along. Self-hosted fonts, fewer tags and an LCP image that is not lazy-loaded are cheaper first moves; Elementor WooCommerce speed fixes covers the builder side. The reverse move pays off for one profile only: a small WoodMart store that uses none of the ten features above and fails on blocking time. Astra on blocks would carry far less script, and the price is a full rebuild. For other pairings, see Flatsome vs Astra and WoodMart vs Flatsome. A free audit reads your own templates rather than a vendor demo, and fixed prices are on pricing.

Is WoodMart faster than Astra?

WoodMart's demo was faster than Astra's: a mobile score of 67 against 38 and LCP of 4.6 s against 13.7 s. The Astra theme itself is lighter, 8 KB of JavaScript against 103 KB. The Astra demo's weight is tags, Elementor and fonts.

Why is the Astra demo slow if Astra is a lightweight theme?

Because the demo is a starter template built in Elementor with 572 KB of tracking scripts and 432 KB of fonts on top of the theme. Its product photo is also lazy-loaded, so the browser requests it late.

Does Astra have a wishlist for WooCommerce?

Not built in. Astra Pro covers quick view, filters and a pinned add-to-cart bar, and free companion plugins add swatches and dynamic discounts. Wishlists, compare and frequently bought together need third-party plugins. WoodMart includes all three.

Is WoodMart worth $69 when Astra is free?

Yes, if the store will use its wishlists, bundles, tiered pricing or size guides. If it needs none of them, free Astra in the block editor is cheaper and carries far less theme code.
